Chemistry is a truly fascinating subject. It is by studying this area of science that we get to explore the qualities and interaction of matter, and understand everything that surrounds us on a deeper level. However, it can also be stressful and a little overwhelming, especially as you advance on the subject. Don’t fret though if you feel a bit lost in the maze of chemistry. We know some helpful tricks to help build your confidence and find your way through.
Take note of these actionable tips, and who knows, Chemistry might even be your next favourite subject after this?
Tip #1: Understand before you memorise
One of the biggest mistakes student make when studying chemistry is trying to memorise every last detail of their notes. This can be a huge challenge with all the concepts needed to be studied. We always say this to our students—understand before you memorise. In memorisation, we tend to easily forget everything we tried to remember. Whereas comprehension allows deeper learning and the ability to connect concepts with different ideas. So before you try to memorise the important details, go and understand first. There’s no need to worry about mental blocks if you truly get the topics.
Tips #2: Find a studying technique that is most suitable to you
A tip on how you can remember your formulas, symbols, and chemistry terms easier is to find a technique that works for you. Students learn in different ways, you just have to use a system that you’re most comfortable with. To give you an idea, a lot of students find rewriting notes, coming up with mnemonics, and using flashcards effective.
Tip #3: Study regularly
Studying chemistry takes time. If you really want to ace the subject, you should be willing to allocate much time and effort to study. And this should be done regularly, not just before the exam! Take some time to read topics before going to class even though you can’t understand them yet. This way, you can already familiarise yourself with the topics and have a sense of what’s going to be discussed the following class.
Tip #4: Practice, practice, practice
The key to learning chemistry is practice. So go ahead and put practice problems as part of your regular study session. Here’s a tip: don’t stop until you finally figure out the answer. It doesn’t matter if it’s wrong, these are just practice problems afterall. If you’re stuck, you can refer to your notes as guides. Once you’re done, that’s the only time when you should check the answer keys. If you get the answers right, then great! But if not, it’s fine. The reason you’re doing this is to get better every time. Try doing the same problem until you get the answer correctly.
More than any of the tips written above, our most important tip is to just keep trying. Don’t get disappointed if you don’t get your lessons right away. Study, practice, and you’ll get it one way or another. And if you want some expert guidance on studying A-Level Chemistry, you can also ask help from us!
